BORDIGHERA BLU PARK will be an evening dedicated to learning about, protecting, and enhancing the marine protected area of Capo Sant’Ampelio and… Sanremo. Joining us will be Franco Borgogno, journalist and science communicator, Monica Previati, marine biologist, the Consoli del Mare, and our member Gianni Manuguerra as moderator.
How much biodiversity lives in the seabeds of western Liguria, and how can it be discovered and protected? These are the questions the team behind the Bordighera Blu Park project sought to answer, as they were the guests on Tuesday, April 9, at the Yacht Club of Sanremo. The evening, with dinner and a conference, was organized by the Yacht Club Sanremo and the Consulate of the Sea of Sanremo. The event featured Franco Borgogno, journalist and science communicator, and marine biologist Monica Previati, creators of the Bordighera Blu Park educational and environmental project. Through captivating underwater images, the story of the project, carried out by the European Research Institute and supported by the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation as part of the Simbiosi grant, in collaboration with the Municipality of Bordighera, unfolded, exploring three specific areas. Capo Sant’Ampelio, a zone known for its beauty and the southernmost point of Liguria, as well as the underwater areas of “I Tuvi” and “Le Bianche,” characterized by their rich biodiversity, including rare and protected species, such as certain types of gorgonians. Bordighera Blu Park continues its communication activities to increase awareness of the coastal marine environment of Liguria, aiming to foster a deeper understanding among tourists and residents alike of its importance for all aspects of human life. The specific goals of the project are to protect, preserve, and enhance these beautiful areas, each characterized by different depths and accessibility, with unique biodiversity treasures waiting to be discovered and safeguarded.
The project was warmly welcomed by the event’s organizer, Consul of the Sea Giovanni Manuguerra, and the large audience, which also included the President of the Yacht Club Sanremo, Beppe Zaoli, the Honorary President of the Consulate Gustavo Ottolenghi, and the municipal councilor Dr. Sara Tonegutti.
In the context of learning how to better protect our sea, respecting its richness, biodiversity, and centrality to human life, the evening also included a focus on plastic pollution from a sustainability perspective, thanks to the insights of Franco Borgogno, author of the book Un mare di plastica (A Sea of Plastic) (Nutrimenti), which analyzes the problem of plastic pollution, raising awareness of its spread and exploring potential solutions.
Questions and discussions enriched the conference, confirming the shared importance of these topics for the organizers and the Consoli del Mare. Yacht Club Sanremo invites all interested parties to follow their channels to stay informed about upcoming events.
