Tethys Research Institute

The Tethys ONLUS Institute is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of the marine environment through scientific research and public awareness; founded in 1986, it has offices at the Civic Aquarium of Milan and in Sanremo.

The primary aim of Tethys is the conservation of the marine environment through the support of scientific knowledge and participation in the international conservation process as an affiliate or collaborating body with organisations including the following: Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean, the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, the Mediterranean and the Contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS), the Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the Pelagos Sanctuary Agreement.

In over three decades of activity, Tethys has produced one of the largest datasets on Mediterranean cetaceans (available online), communicating the results of its research through hundreds of scientific publications. In 1991 it was the first to conceive and propose the creation of an emblematic protected area, the Pelagos Sanctuary for the conservation of Mediterranean marine mammals, the first in the world established beyond national jurisdictions. As part of a citizen science program that is now among the longest in the world, Tethys has involved thousands of people of all nationalities as non-specialist collaborators in activities at sea since 1987.

One Ocean Foundation

The One Ocean Foundation is an environmental sustainability project focused on the preservation of the marine environment, launched in 2017 by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the One Ocean Forum, the first forum organised in Italy on the theme of safeguarding the sea created in partnership with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and SDA Bocconi Sustainability LAB.
Following the success of the forum, the One Ocean Foundation was formed in February 2018.

The One Ocean Foundation was established with the aim of  accelerating solutions to ocean problems by inspiring international leaders, promoting a sustainable blue economy and improving ocean knowledge through ocean literacy. In this sense, over the last four years, the One Ocean Foundation has collaborated with high-level institutions, research centres and universities.

Reconciling technological innovation and environmental protection to design better societies and economies: this is its unavoidable challenge in this moment of emergency. A challenge that represents a unique opportunity.

A more sustainable world is also a world that is stronger in the face of crises and innovative in the way it does business.
